The AstroSafari.com online community is a discussion forum based on the popular Chevrolet Astro and GMC Safari vans. AstroSafari.com is a one stop resource for all Astro/Safari van related discussions, with forum topics & photos including maintenance, repairs, performance, and care. The Astro and Safari both have popular followings due, in part, to their mid-size construction, rear wheel drive, and truck-based design. Some vans have the original 4.3L Vortec V6 engine which can easily be swapped with a small-block V8 engine, such as the Chevrolet 350. This swap is simplified because the 4.3L V6 is based on the GM small-block V8, and most of the factory drivetrain components can be reused. Both street and off-road modifications have become popular through the life of the Astro/Safari vans. The combination of a powerful drivetrain, large cargo and passenger space, all-wheel (or rear wheel) drive, and stock locking differential for the rear axle, facilitate off road modifications. The ease and availability of aftermarket parts such as ground effects, air suspension, leaf spring flip-kits, lowering spindles, c-notches, and large wheels make these vans a favorite among the lowered suspension crowd. AstroSafari.com has been on the web since 2002 and some say even earlier in some form or another. Known now as the "The original home for Astro & Safari vans" AstroSafari.com has a solid membership of helpful enthusiasts. what about removing the rear drive shaft on an awd astro. will i have any problems running on just the frt. drive alone??
There are no cats on my '95. The PO removed them and installed a high-flow exhaust. No SES or other warning lights (assuming they are operational)
Anytime jshrsnrnd...If you have anymore questions about the V8 conversion, Ask in the V8 section and we will do our best to help.
Hi Big_Kid...That's a very good point you bring up between OBDI and OBDII....Maybe gut the Cat first, then see what happens..
Hmmmm.... I know a guy who has a hollow cat on his '95, and has no codes. It lopes some at traffic lights, but no codes.
Hi jshrsnrnd....Only 2 people I know of that have even done a big block conversion. Both have mentions of it on the old Icon board if you care to have a look....Just a heads up here, this is a family based site so we ask you take that into consideration when you make a post...Thanks.
can a person gut a cat for freer flow and not get any codes in the comp. also can a person drop the rear driveshaft on an awd and run on just the front?? what is needed to do this?
i understand the PR austin ,, and i apologiize for being maybe too up front and to the the point ,,,and possibly offending some of them ........... i am stil looking for someone who has done the big block swap
thanks for the heads up guys , i already kno what most people will do ......... thanks austin
most people go with a small block in these, it's easier.Try your question in the V-8 swap section, you'd probably get more response there than right here trying to insult people
so , um , no real knowledge here ? where should i look ? most of the questions ive seen here shouldnt be asked by a car guy , you know theres zit faced name tag wearing people that work at autozone to answer those , ??????
hello all , i am preparing to install a 454 into a 97 safari and looking for someone who has done the big block swap before , any info ?
Is the system overcharged, by any chance? If not, it may be time for a compressor. You could also have a blockage in the system.
